It’s been a rough couple of days in the apinchadash house. My fella came down with a stomach bug. Well, more of a stomach ache. It brought me back to the days of being a little kid, when Mom would snuggle me up in blankets on the couch, put on my favorite Disney movie, and bring me saltines and ginger ale. It always worked like a charm.
So of course, not wanting to see him feeling that way, I instantly thought of ginger ale. We all associate ginger ale with a stomache ache, and for good reason. Ginger is a wonder root. Not only does it soothe a stomach ache, it can help with tooth pain, inflammation, and it’s also an immunity booster (plus a million other awesome things).
But the truth is, store bought ginger ale doesn’t really have much ginger in it, if any at all!
So does it really help soothe our bellies, or is it just in our heads? I’m not sure. But, I wanted to make some REAL ginger ale, something that would actually help, and boy did it ever.
Not to mention, it tastes sooooo good, and it literally took 5 minutes of cook time to make.
So worth it, and I won’t be getting store bought ever again. Aside from not having much real ginger, they’re packed full of high fructose corn syrup, artifical flavors, and preservatives. No bueno.
My ginger ale is made with lots of good, fresh ginger, water, a little sugar, and honey.
This stuff is the REAL deal.
Here’s how to make it:
Homemade Ginger Ale
What You’ll Need:
+ 2 cups water
+ 1/4 cup ginger root, chopped
+ 1/8 cup dark brown sugar
+ 1/2 cup honey (you can use granulated sugar, if you prefer)
+ carbonated water
Place the ginger root in the 2 cups of water and bring to a boil. Take off the heat and set aside to let steep for about an hour.
Strain the ginger pieces out of the ginger water, and put the pot back on the heat. Add the sugar and honey, and whisk to combine. Bring back up to a boil and stir until the sugars are dissolved. Allow to cool, and place in a container in the refrigerator.
To serve, pour about 1/8 to 1/4 cup of the syrup in a cup. Top with the carbonated water. Add more syrup if necessary, we all have different tastes! 🙂
