Soothing Aloe Mint Lotion

I’d like to start off today’s post by introducing you to a new section on my website. It’s called, “The Kitchen Spa” (the tab is up in the menu bar). I’m really excited about this section, because as much as I like cooking from scratch, I like making my own bath/body/beauty products, too, from things that you will most likely find right in your kitchen!

Your skin is the biggest organ on your body. It is where your body absorbs, as well as releases toxins. So, I think it’s important to know what you put on it! Some of the odd chemicals and ingredients in store bought products make me a little uncomfortable. Even if they aren’t BAD for your body to absorb, many of these lotions and creams contain ingredients that make it difficult for your skin to breath, and release toxins. Almost like putting saran wrap tightly over your skin.

I can honestly say, that since I’ve been making some of my own stuff, I am amazed at how much better it works than things that would cost $60 or more. The best part: Most of the stuff I make costs less than $1 to make, and it’s easy, too!

This is still mainly a cooking blog, but every once in a while we will have one of these fun new ‘kitchen spa’ recipes!

Now, moving on to the main attraction:aloemintlotion apinchadash

Ahhhhhh. Isn’t the name itself just soothing? Aloe. Mint. Cool. Refreshing. You can almost feel that cool, minty air now, can’t you? (Remember those ice breakers commercials?!)

This recipe was inspired by my upcoming beach vacation. I am always very good about using proper sun protection, but sometimes, burns happen. Even if you don’t burn, but you’ve just been outside in the heat all day, this lotion is increeeedible!

Lets break it down: Coconut oil in itself is a wonder woman for your skin. It helps repair, restore, moisturize, AND, fun fact: Has a slight SPF in it naturally. The Aloe Gel, of course, helps soothe and restore burned/ damaged skin. The peppermint oil is what gives you that cool, refreshing feel. When its 90 degrees out, the peppermint makes me feel like it’s 70. Pure air conditioning in a bottle. And last but not least, Vitamin E. Not only does it heal and aid in cell regeneration, but it can help protect against skin cancer!

So, whether your skin is burned, dry, damaged, or just in need of a cool down. This stuff is a miracle worker. When I first made it, I rubbed a bit on my arm. It soaked in very quickly (not greasy at all), but it left this glowy, plump sheen to my skin. I’ve tried a lot of lotions and I can honestly say, that not ONE has ever made my skin look or feel that good.

I would pay $60 for a small jar of this stuff (and I’m a cheap skate).

I keep my jar in the refrigerator, just because I don’t want it to melt and I want to preserve that fresh aloe as long as possible. But, if you whip the coconut oil long enough, it wont become a rock, and when its cold from the fridge, it’s an even better treat.

Now, here’s how to make it.

Soothing Aloe Mint Lotion

What You’ll Need:

+ 1 cup coconut oil

+ 2 or 3 Tablespoons fresh aloe gel

+ 2 Vitamin E Capsules, broken open

+ 10-15 drops peppermint oil

Add all of the ingredients to a bowl or stand mixer. Whisk them all together until light and fluffy (not so much that the oil melts). Spoon into an air tight jar, and enjoy.

Boy, that was easy, wasn’t it?!
