Blueberry BBQ Grilled Salmon

I hate to say it..honest I do, but Summer is coming to an end pretty soon. It breaks my heart, but its true, and while the weather may be getting cooler and the leaves beginning to change, I am grasping onto summer with both hands and not letting go so easily.

Part of my plan is to get as many seasonal fruits and veggies while I still can! I bought a gorgeous container of blueberries at a local farm stand last week, and instead of going the usual sweet route, I decided to use them in a savory main dish.

We are pretty barbecue sauce crazy in this household, and as I’m sure you can guess I like to make my own! It’s seriously so simple to do, and there’s nothing better than being able to customize it the way you and your family like. Whether you like things spicy, sweet, can’t have sugar, cutting back on salt, gluten free, etc., making your own is a sure way to suit your needs (and no funny ingredients involved..*ahem* High Fructose Corn Syrup). Don’t ask me what made me think that blueberries would make a good bbq sauce, but oh my lanta did they ever!!! It added this slightly sweet, fresh tartness that cut through that usually thick, salty, smoky sauce.

Lets start off with the recipe for my yummy blueberry bbq sauce. Yet another thing I should make a bunch of and can to last us through the winter! (The question is…will I ever get around to it?!)

Blueberry BBQ Sauce

Makes 1 Cup

What You’ll Need:

+ 1 cup fresh blueberries

+ 1 cup ketchup (homemade preferred)

+ 2 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar

+ 2 Tablespoons balsamic vinegar

+ 2 teaspoons worchestershire sauce

+ 4 Tablespoons brown sugar

+ 1 teaspoon ground mustard

+ 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

+ 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Place a small saucepan over low heat and add the fresh blueberries. Cook until the begin to bubble and burst, about 10 minutes, and mash with a utencil. Add in the remaining ingredients to the pot. Whisk well to combine and break up blueberries. Turn the heat up to medium low, and heat until mixture comes to a small boil, stirring every few minutes. If it starts to boil and spatter too much, turn the heat back down a bit. Cook for 20 minutes, whisking every few minutes. Sauce will be nice and thick. A good test is to dip a spoon in and carefully (it’s like molten lava!) run your finger down the middle of the spoon. If your finger mark stays put, it’s the right thickness. 


Now onto this gorgeous grilled salmon. You may not think that blueberry bbq sauce would be good on salmon, but boy is it ever! The bbq sauce and the salmon both bring out eachothers best qualities; the sweetness, the acidity, the smokiness. It is truly the perfect balance that will make you ask yourself why it’s taken you so long to cook them together!


Blueberry BBQ Grilled Salmon

What You’ll Need:

+ 1 1/2 pounds salmon

+your blueberry BBQ sauce!

Preheat your grill to high. Season the salmon with salt and pepper. Lay the salmon flesh side down on the grill. Cook for 5 minutes, then gently flip. If it seems to be sticking, give it a minute more. It should loosen up when it’s ready. Using a pastry brush, brush BBQ sauce on salmon and let cook until flaky and opaque, about 5-6 more minutes. This will also depend on the thickness of your salmon (mine was about 1 1/2 inches thick). Once salmon is finished, slather with remaining BBQ sauce and serve.
