Homemade Tomato Ketchup

While this blog is about cooking from scratch, I will not deny the fact that I do from time to time buy and use “convenience”, or pre-made foods. I understand how difficult it is to make every single little thing you eat from scratch, but I will tell you, that every time I DO buy something, all I think about is how much money I could save, how much healthier it could be for me, and how much tastier I could make it if I had just taken the 10 minutes to make it homemade. This especially goes for ketchup.


Over the past decade we have learned just how bad high fructose corn syrup is for us. It’s a major factor in obesity, and it’s in just about every little thing we buy. About 5 years ago, I was shocked to learn that Ketchup is full of the stuff, as well as artificial flavorings and preservatives. The first thing I think about is kids. Ketchup is a staple for many children, and it can be such an unhealthy condiment when eaten frequently.

The recipe for ketchup that I have for you requires no cooking, and it takes literally 5 minutes to make. I like to make a big batch and can it. In a small amount of time, I can have a shelf full ready for any occasion.

If you don’t have time to can it, it will stay good in your fridge for about a month. You can also just make it by the serving. It is full of natural, healthy ingredients, and I swear it tastes practically identical. The other great thing is being able to customize it. Add some chili powder and make it spicy, for example.

To make a 16 ounce jar of ketchup, it costs me approximately $0.96 to make. If you buy a lot of ketchup, you will save a ton in the end.

As I said earlier, I have no problem with store bought ketchup, and I do buy it on occasion, but if homemade= delicous, healthy, and cheap, then to me there’s no reason to NOT make it, at least sometimes.


Homemade Tomato Ketchup

Makes 2 Servings (Quadruple the recipe to make a jar full)

What You’ll Need: 

+ 6 Tablespoons tomato paste

+ 2 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar

+ 1/4 an onion, grated (or for smooth ketchup, 2 tsp. onion powder)

+ 1 clove garlic, minced (or 1 tsp. garlic powder)

+ 2 teaspoons honey (preferably raw)

+ about 1/8-1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper (to taste)

Whisk all together in a medium bowl until combined. You can serve immediately, but refrigerating will help combine the flavors a bit. Store in an air tight container (such as a mason jar). It’s THAT easy!
